Lapping Machine
is used for polishing. The term "lapping" is used to describe a number of various surface finishing operations where loose abrasive powders are used as the grinding agent at normally low speeds. It is a process reserved for products that demand very tight tolerances of flatness, parallelism, thickness or finish.

WORKING:
The word LAP is an abreviation which is Loose Abrasive Process. This involves the use of Abrasive (hard or brittle) particles to modify the work-pieces.The Abrasive Particles are mixed with a Water- Base/Oil Base Liquid. The mixed Abrasive and Liquid is called a “Slurry”, this is a Liquid Cutting Tool. The Slurry is placed on a Rotating Motorized iron plate Called a “Lap Plate”.Rolling/Sliding Action of Abrasive Grains between the plate and work piece.

The basic theory of lapping begins with the materials being placed between the confines of affecting rings directly onto the surface of a rotating lap plate that is covered with a perfectly balanced film layer of slurry. These rings run on the surface of the Lapping or Polishing Plate which contains and gives drive to the pieces being lapped. By having chambers on their outer edges, the rings help to impregnate the Lapping Plate with the diamond abrasive. The rings can also be used to help control the lapping plate flatness.Concurrently the abrasive is acting on the lap plate via the contact surface of both the components and conditioning rings causing wear that when controlled by adjustable radial ring position will effect spherical curvature changes to maintain a flat lap plate condition. The standard number of conditioning rings used is three but four rings are common on some larger Machines. For special applications, however, special ring sizes can be used.
